Julia Schiff

Julia Schiff, born in 1940 in Detta in Romania’s Banat region, is a German-language writer, essayist, literary critic, and translator. At the age of eleven, she was deported with her family to the Bărăgan Steppe; the deportees were allowed to return in 1956. After training as a primary-school teacher, she studied Romanian and French at the Faculty of Philology at the University of Timișoara. In 1981, she moved with her family to West Germany. She worked for fifteen years at the University of Munich’s Institute of Romance Philology. Her publications include “Steppensalz” (2001), “Nachtfalterzeit” (2008), “Reihertanz” (2011), “Verschiebungen” (2013), and “Katzengold” (2016). Among other honors, she received the Media Prize of the Association of Expellees in Bavaria in 1993 and the Danube Swabian Cultural Prize of Baden-Württemberg in 2001.
