Wolfgang Krege (1939–2005) was born in Berlin. He worked as an encyclopedia editor, copywriter, and publishing editor, and began working as a translator in 1970. He became particularly known for his translations of major works by J. R. R. Tolkien, including The Hobbit and The Silmarillion, as well as for his new translation of The Lord of the Rings.
