Jostein Gaarder

Jostein Gaarder, born in 1952, is a Norwegian author. He studied philosophy, theology and literary studies, and subsequently taught philosophy in schools and adult education. His first book was published in 1986, followed by his first children’s book in 1987. He became internationally known for the novel *Sophie's World* (1993), which has been translated into more than 50 languages and presents the history of philosophy to a young audience. For the book, Gaarder received the German Youth Literature Prize in 1994 and Poland’s Janusz Korczak Prize in 1996.
