Josef W. Egger was a medical psychologist, behavioral medicine specialist, clinical and health psychologist, and psychotherapist. Until his retirement at the end of 2014, he held the chair of biopsychosocial medicine at the Medical University of Graz, described as the first professorship for “talking medicine” in the German-speaking world. In the 1980s, he established the first department of behavioral medicine at an Austrian university. At the Medical University of Graz, he also headed research units concerned with behavioral medicine, health psychology, and empirical psychosomatics. For many years, he edited the professional journal Psychologische Medizin and was a co-founder of Austria’s PSY diploma programs.
