Hermann Schmitz

Hermann Schmitz, born in Leipzig in 1928, received his doctorate in 1955 and his habilitation in philosophy in 1958. From 1971 to 1993, he was professor of philosophy at the University of Kiel. He founded New Phenomenology and wrote numerous books and essays, including The Way of European Philosophy: An Examination of Conscience, A Short Introduction to New Phenomenology, and Phenomenology of Time. In 2011, Hans Werhahn edited a volume of conversations about Schmitz’s philosophy.
