Josef Čapek (1887–1945) was a Czech painter, draughtsman, graphic artist, photographer, and writer. His wide-ranging artistic work included Cubist paintings and prints, watercolours, book design, and illustrations. As a writer, he produced short stories, plays, essays on art, and children’s books. Together with his brother, the writer Karel Čapek, he published short stories and plays. Because of his criticism of Nazism, Čapek was arrested in 1939 and deported to several concentration camps. He died at Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in 1945.
