Johannes Grave

Johannes Grave (born 1976) is a German art historian. He studied in Freiburg and earned his doctorate at the University of Jena with a dissertation on Goethe’s art collections. From 2009 to 2012, he was deputy director of the German Centre for Art History in Paris. After completing his habilitation at the University of Basel and holding a professorship at Bielefeld University, he took up a professorship in modern art history at Friedrich Schiller University Jena. His research focuses on Romanticism and art around 1800, Italian and French painting of the early modern period, and picture theory. In 2020, he received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize. His publications include »Giovanni Bellini: Venice and the Art of Contemplation« (2018), »Bild und Zeit. Eine Theorie des Bildbetrachtens« (2022), and a monograph on Caspar David Friedrich.
