Caspar David Friedrich

Caspar David Friedrich (1774, Greifswald – 1840, Dresden) was a German painter, printmaker, and draughtsman. He is regarded as one of the most important artists of German Romanticism. His best-known works include the Tetschen Altarpiece, Monk by the Sea, The Sea of Ice, and The Abbey in the Oakwood. In addition to paintings, his work includes woodcuts, etchings, watercolors, transparencies, studies of nature, and designs.
