Jochen Schimmang (born 1948) studied political science and philosophy at the Free University of Berlin and taught at universities and in adult education. He made his literary debut in 1979 with the novel »Der schöne Vogel Phönix« and worked as a writer and translator. His works include »Das Beste, was wir hatten«, »Neue Mitte«, »Altes Zollhaus, Staatsgrenze West«, »Adorno wohnt hier nicht mehr« and »Laborschläfer«. He received the Rheingau Literature Prize in 2010 for »Das Beste, was wir hatten«, the Walter Kempowski Prize for Biographical Literature of the State of Lower Saxony in 2019, and the Italo-Svevo Prize for his life’s work in 2021.
