Jaan Kross

Jaan Kross (1920–2007) was born in Tallinn, where he also died. The Estonian writer was arrested by the German occupying authorities in spring 1944 and by the Soviets in 1946. After returning from Siberia in 1954, he began publishing and subsequently worked as a freelance writer. His work included thirteen novels, which were translated into numerous languages and received many awards. Kross was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1997 and 1998. His works published in German include “Wikmans Zöglinge.”
