J. M. Barrie (1860–1937), born in Kirriemuir, Scotland, was a Scottish writer and dramatist. He studied at the University of Edinburgh and began his literary career as a journalist in Nottingham. From 1885, he worked in London, writing short stories, novels and plays. He is best known for “Peter Pan”, first performed as a play in 1904 and published as a novel in 1911. The character was influenced by children with whom Barrie had a close relationship and whom he later raised. He was created a baronet in 1913. Barrie left the rights to “Peter Pan” to a London children’s hospital.
