Iskender Gider was born in Istanbul in 1957 and moved to West Germany with his family at the age of nine. After attending school in Cologne and Recklinghausen, he studied graphic design in Düsseldorf. He worked as an advertising graphic artist and cartoonist and taught at the University of Essen. Gider also created objects and sculptures, often from scrap metal. Animals play an important role in his picture books; among his preferred subjects are elephants, pigs, chickens, and foxes.
