Holger Gertz was born in Oldenburg in 1968 and studied social sciences and communication studies in Bremen and Munich. He worked as a reporter and Streiflicht contributor for the Süddeutsche Zeitung, including as a Seite-Drei reporter, columnist and Tatort critic. Gertz covered seven Olympic Games and wrote portraits of figures including Udo Jürgens, Egon Bahr and Franz Beckenbauer. His journalism has received awards including the Axel Springer Prize, the Georg Schreiber Prize and, as a member of the Streiflicht team, the Henri Nannen Prize. He was named Reporter of the Year in 2010 and Sports Journalist of the Year in 2021 and 2023.
