Hilde Spiel

Hilde Spiel (1911–1990) was an Austrian writer, journalist, translator and literary critic. Born in Vienna, she studied philosophy and psychology and received her doctorate in 1936. Her first literary success came in 1933 with the novel *Kati auf der Brücke*. In 1936 she emigrated to London, where she worked as a journalist and translator. Her wide-ranging oeuvre includes novels, novellas, essays, criticism, travel writing and memoirs. Among other distinctions, she received the Goethe Medal from the Goethe-Institut for her services to the German language.
