Henryk Bereska

Henryk Bereska (1926–2005) was a German editor and translator of Polish literature. Born in Katowice, he grew up bilingually and studied German and Slavic languages and literature. Until 1955, he worked as an editor at Aufbau Verlag. He became known particularly for his translations of Polish authors, including Tadeusz Różewicz, Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, Adam Zagajewski, and Czesław Miłosz. Bereska was among the signatories of a declaration opposing the expatriation of the singer-songwriter Wolf Biermann. He received numerous prizes and honors for his contribution to Polish literature in Germany. He died in Berlin in 2005.
