Henrik Ibsen (1828–1906) was a Norwegian playwright. Born in Skien, he began an apprenticeship as a pharmacist at the age of 15 while writing his first texts. In 1851 he joined the theatre in Bergen and later held a leading position at the Kristiania Norske Theater. From 1864, Ibsen lived outside Norway for 27 years, mainly in Italy and Germany. His best-known plays include *Brand* (1866), *Peer Gynt* (1867), *A Doll’s House* (1879), *Ghosts* (1881), *An Enemy of the People* (1882), and *Hedda Gabler* (1890). Through his socially critical and psychologically focused dramas, he became one of the most influential pioneers of modern theatre. Ibsen died in Kristiania, now Oslo.
