Henning Mankell

Henning Mankell (1948–2015) was a Swedish writer, theatre director and artistic director. He became internationally known chiefly for his crime novels featuring Inspector Wallander, which were translated into more than 40 languages and adapted for film and television. From the late 1960s onward, Mankell worked at various theatres in Sweden. He also maintained a close connection with Africa and directed the Teatro Avenida in Maputo, Mozambique. In addition to novels, his literary work included numerous plays. In 2009, he received the Erich Maria Remarque Peace Prize for his commitment to Africa. Mankell died in Gothenburg on 5 October 2015.
