Gottfried Boehm

Gottfried Boehm, born in 1942 in Braunau (Bohemia), is a German art historian and philosopher. He studied art history, philosophy and German literature in Cologne, Vienna and Heidelberg, earning a doctorate in philosophy in 1968. In 1974 he completed his habilitation in art history in Heidelberg. After professorships at Ruhr University Bochum and Justus Liebig University Giessen, he became Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art History at the University of Basel in 1986; he has been emeritus since 2012. Boehm was a fellow of the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin and the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles. From 2005 to 2012, he directed the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research project “Image Criticism.” He is a member of several scholarly academies and received the Judd-Hume Prize in Edinburgh in 2017.
