Gisella Perl

Gisella Perl (1907–1988) was a Jewish gynecologist from Sighet, a Romanian town under Hungarian occupation at the time. In 1944, she was deported with her family to Auschwitz-Birkenau. As a camp physician, she helped hundreds of women and performed abortions to protect them from the experiments of Josef Mengele. After her liberation, she emigrated to the United States in 1947. In 1948, she published one of the early books about Auschwitz. She later worked as a gynecologist at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.
