Gary Snyder

Gary Snyder, born in 1930 in San Francisco, is an American poet and writer. He studied anthropology and Asian languages and lived in Japan from 1956 to 1964. A central figure of the Beat movement, he was associated with Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. He later became increasingly engaged with Buddhist thought. In 1975, he received the Pulitzer Prize for his poetry collection “Turtle Island.” In 2003, he was elected Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets.
