Allen Ginsberg (1926–1997) was an American poet and writer and a central figure of the Beat Generation. He became particularly known for the poem “Howl,” which he first performed at San Francisco’s Six Gallery in October 1955 and which was published the following year. His works include “Kaddish,” “Indian Journal,” “The Fall of America,” and “Jukebox Elegies.” He received the National Book Award for “The Fall of America.” He was also a recipient of the National Arts Club Gold Medal and a member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters.
