Ganna-Maria Braungardt, born in 1956 in Crimmitschau, studied Russian language and literature in Voronezh, Russia, from 1975 to 1980. She subsequently worked as a research associate at the Central Institute for Literary History of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR and, from 1985 to 1990, as an editor at the Berlin-based Volk und Welt publishing house. From 1991 onward, she worked as a freelance literary translator. Her translations from Russian included works by Svetlana Alexievich, Lyudmila Ulitskaya, Boris Akunin, and Polina Dashkova, among others.
