Franz Rosenzweig (1886–1929) was a Jewish religious philosopher, educator, and historian. In the early 1920s, he taught at the Free Jewish House of Learning in Frankfurt am Main, which he helped establish. His major work, “The Star of Redemption,” was published in 1921. From 1924, Rosenzweig worked with Martin Buber on a German translation of the Hebrew Bible; he also translated hymns and poems by Judah Halevi. Despite suffering from severe paralysis, he continued his work until his death in 1929.
