Francis Durbridge was born in Hull, England, in 1912 and studied at the University of Birmingham. After briefly working as a stockbroker, he devoted himself to writing. He began with plays and short stories and later wrote crime fiction, radio plays and screenplays for television productions. From 1938, he worked as a radio dramatist for the BBC for around three decades. He became particularly known for his successful crime series for radio and television. Durbridge died in London in 1998.
