Ernst Lothar, born Ernst Lothar Müller, was born in Brno in 1890 and died in Vienna in 1974. Trained as a lawyer, he initially worked as a public prosecutor before becoming a theater critic and director in 1925. He later headed the Theater in der Josefstadt. In 1938 he emigrated to the United States and returned to Vienna after the Second World War. From 1948 he worked as a director at the Burgtheater and served on the board of the Salzburg Festival. His family saga The Angel with the Trumpet was made into a film in 1948, starring actors including Paula Wessely, Attila and Paul Hörbiger, Oskar Werner, and Curd Jürgens.
