Emily Brontë (1818–1848) was a British novelist and poet. The daughter of the clergyman Patrick Brontë, she grew up with her siblings in Haworth, Yorkshire. As a child, she and her siblings wrote stories set in imaginary worlds. After studying in England and Brussels, she worked for a time as a teacher before returning to Haworth, where she helped run the family household. In 1846, she published a volume of poetry with her sisters Charlotte and Anne. She is best known for her only novel, Wuthering Heights (1847), which was published under the pseudonym Ellis Bell.
