Charlotte Brontë (1816–1855) was a British writer. She was born in Thornton, Yorkshire, to the clergyman Patrick Brontë and grew up with her siblings. As a child, she began writing stories with Emily, Anne and their brother Branwell. Brontë worked as a teacher and governess and studied French in Brussels in 1842. In 1846, she and her sisters published a volume of poetry under the male pseudonyms Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell. Her literary breakthrough came in 1847 with the novel Jane Eyre, which was initially published under the pseudonym Currer Bell. Her other works include the posthumously published novel The Professor.
