Einar Schlereth, born in 1937 in Marienwerder, studied English and Romance languages and literature in Hamburg and Freiburg im Breisgau. He worked as a journalist and freelance contributor for Norddeutscher Rundfunk and Radio Bremen, producing radio features on the Global South, environmental issues and minorities. He also translated works from French, Swedish and English, including books by Frantz Fanon, Jan Myrdal and Arundhati Roy. His own publications include books on Indonesia, Tanzania and China. According to his own account, he worked in around 50 different industries to finance his studies.
