Dzevad Karahasan

Dževad Karahasan (1953–2023) was born in Duvno, then in Yugoslavia, and worked as a novelist, essayist, and playwright. His oeuvre includes novels, short stories, essays, and plays. His best-known books include Shahriyar’s Ring (1997) and Sara and Serafina (2000). Among other honors, he received the Leipzig Book Prize for European Understanding in 2004 and the Goethe Prize of the City of Frankfurt in 2020. Karahasan died in Graz on May 19, 2023.
