Andrej Platonov (1899–1951), born in Voronezh, began working at the age of 14. He later attended a railway technical college and worked as an engineer specializing in irrigation technology and electrification during the 1920s. From 1918 onward, he published poetry, short stories, and journalistic writing. His major works include the novels Chevengur (1926) and The Foundation Pit (1930), which initially could not be published. His work began to be rediscovered in the 1980s.
