Dieter Henrich

Dieter Henrich (1927–2022) was a German philosopher. He studied in Marburg, Frankfurt and Heidelberg and received his doctorate in 1950 with a dissertation on the foundations of Max Weber’s theory of science. After completing his habilitation, he taught in Berlin, Heidelberg and as a visiting professor in the United States, including at Columbia University and Harvard University. In 1981, he was appointed professor of philosophy at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, where he became emeritus in 1994. From 1997, he was an honorary professor at Humboldt University of Berlin. His work focused, among other subjects, on German idealism, self-consciousness and the study of intellectual constellations. His distinctions included the Hölderlin Prize, the German Language Prize and honorary membership of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
