Dieter Bachmann, born in Basel in 1940, studied literary studies and philosophy in Zurich and earned a doctorate in 1968. He worked as a feuilleton editor for Weltwoche, contributed to publications including Die Zeit, and later served as an editor at Tages-Anzeiger Magazin. From 1988 to 1998, he was editor-in-chief of the magazine Du, where he reshaped its editorial concept. His first novel, Rab, was published in 1985, followed by works including Der kürzere Atem (1998), Grimsels Zeit (2002), Die Gärten der Medusa (2015), and Unwiderruflich letzte Vorstellungen (2020). From 2000 to 2003, Bachmann directed the Instituto Svizzero in Rome. His other publications include a book on Italy, a collection of stories, and Archipel, a three-volume collection of essays published in 2022. He received several awards for his work.
