Jack Kerouac (1922–1969) was an American writer and, alongside William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg, one of the leading authors of the Beat Generation. Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, he served in the merchant marine during the Second World War. He later traveled through the United States and Mexico, working various temporary jobs. His novel “On the Road” became one of the best-known works of 20th-century American literature. Kerouac died in St. Petersburg, Florida.
