Tenzin Gyatso, born in Tibet in 1935, is a Buddhist monk and the 14th Dalai Lama. After the occupation of Tibet by China, he fled to India in 1959. Until his voluntary withdrawal from political office in 2011, he served as the spiritual and political leader of the Tibetans. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for his commitment to peace and nonviolent resistance. Through lectures, books, and international dialogue, he became one of the best-known representatives of Tibetan Buddhism worldwide.
