Desmond Mpilo Tutu was a South African Anglican cleric and human rights activist. From 1986 to 1996, he served as Archbishop of Cape Town and Primate of the Church of the Province of South Africa. A leading voice in the struggle against apartheid and for reconciliation, he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984. From 1995, he chaired South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission. In 2009, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
