Clive Staples Lewis

Clive Staples Lewis (1898–1963) was an Irish writer and literary scholar. He studied at Oxford, taught there, and from 1954 held the Cambridge chair of English Literature of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. During the First World War, he served as a soldier and was wounded. Lewis wrote scholarly and apologetic works, poetry, science fiction, and children’s books. He became best known for the seven-volume series The Chronicles of Narnia. In Oxford, his circle of friends included J. R. R. Tolkien; both were members of the literary group known as the Inklings.
