Claudio Magris

Claudio Magris, born in Trieste in 1939, is an Italian writer and scholar of German literature. He studied German at the universities of Turin and Freiburg and was a professor of German language and literature at the University of Trieste until his retirement in 2006. His notable works include “Danube: A Sentimental Journey,” “Blindly,” “The Investigation,” and “Gekrümmte Zeit in Krems.” His literary and essayistic work has received several major awards, including the Premio Strega, the Leipzig Book Prize for European Understanding, the Prince of Asturias Award, and the 2009 Peace Prize of the German Book Trade. In 2012, he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
