Claude Simon (1913–2005) was a French writer and a leading representative of the Nouveau Roman. Born in Madagascar, he died in Paris. During the Second World War, he served as a cavalryman, was captured by German forces, and later escaped from captivity. His novels addressed, among other subjects, experiences of war and family history. He received the Prix Médicis in 1967 for his novel *Histoire* and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1985.
