Catherine Poulain was born in France and spent ten years working on the seas off Alaska. Before becoming a writer, she worked at a fish cannery in Iceland, a shipyard in the United States, and as a bartender in Hong Kong. Her debut novel, *Die Seefahrerin*, was nominated for the Prix Goncourt du Premier Roman in 2016 and received numerous awards.
