Bruno Kern, born in Vienna in 1958, studied theology and philosophy in Vienna, Fribourg, Munich and Bonn, and earned a doctorate in theology. He worked as a freelance editor, translator and author. His publications include a biography of Karl Marx as well as annotated editions and collections of writings by Karl Marx and Karl Kraus. He also translated works by Marguerite Porete, Blaise Pascal and Hildegard of Bingen, among others.
