Rosa Luxemburg (1871–1919) was born in Zamość, then in Russian Poland, and earned a doctorate in economics during her Swiss exile. In Berlin, she became a leading theorist and activist of the left wing of social democracy and a committed antimilitarist. Together with Karl Liebknecht, she founded the revolutionary Spartacus League, which in 1918 became the Communist Party of Germany. Luxemburg was murdered in Berlin on 15 January 1919.
