Bertha von Suttner

Bertha von Suttner (1843–1914) was an Austrian writer, pacifist, and political activist in the peace movement. From 1876 to 1885, she lived in Georgia with her husband and worked as a journalist. In 1889, she published the pacifist novel “Lay Down Your Arms!”, which was widely translated and became one of the best-known works of anti-war literature. She helped found the German Peace Society in 1892. In 1905, she became the first woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
