Joseph Roth (1894–1939) was an Austrian writer and journalist. He was born in Brody, Galicia, studied German and philosophy in Vienna, and served as an Austrian soldier during the First World War. From 1918/19 onward he worked as a journalist in cities including Vienna, Berlin, Frankfurt, and Prague, and also wrote travel reports and essays. In 1933 he went into exile in France. His best-known works include the novels *Hotel Savoy* (1924), *Job* (1930), *The Radetzky March* (1932), and *The Emperor’s Tomb* (1938), as well as the novella *The Legend of the Holy Drinker*. Roth died in Paris in 1939.
