Benedict XVI was born Joseph Ratzinger in Marktl am Inn in 1927 and died in 2022. The German theologian was a professor of dogmatic and fundamental theology in Freising, Bonn, Münster, Tübingen, and Regensburg, and served as a theological adviser at the Second Vatican Council. In 1977 he was appointed Archbishop of Munich and Freising and made a cardinal. In 1981, Pope John Paul II appointed him prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. He was elected pope in 2005 and resigned from the papacy in 2013.
