Bachtyar Ali was born in 1966 in Sulaymaniyah in northern Iraq. In 1983, his involvement in student protests brought him into conflict with Saddam Hussein’s dictatorship. He abandoned his geology studies to devote himself to poetry. His first poetry collection, “Gunah w Karnaval” (“Sin and Carnival”), was published in 1992. He wrote novels, poetry and essays. He received the Nelly Sachs Prize in 2017 and the Hilde Domin Prize in 2023.
