Sherko Bekas (1940–2013) was a Kurdish writer and a leading figure in modern Kurdish literature. He was born in Sulaimaniya, in the Iraqi part of Kurdistan. He left his homeland in 1986 because of political persecution and subsequently lived in exile in Sweden. In 1988, he received the Tucholsky Prize from the Swedish PEN Club. In 1992, he returned to the Kurdish-administered areas of Iraq.
