Born in 1957, Axel Merz initially worked for five years with the German Federal Border Guard. He then studied archaeology and the natural sciences at the University of Bonn, graduating with a degree in chemistry. In 1994, he began translating fiction and nonfiction. The authors whose works he translated include Isaac Asimov, Dan Brown, Lincoln Child, Ann Granger, Philip Kerr, Jonathan Miles, and Laurence van Cott Niven.
