Amos Oz

Amos Oz (1939–2018), born Amos Klausner in Jerusalem, was an Israeli writer. In 1954, he joined Kibbutz Hulda and adopted the name Oz, which means “strength” or “power” in Hebrew. He wrote novels, short stories, essays and children’s books, and taught Hebrew literature at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev from 1987 to 2005. Oz was a co-founder of the Israeli peace movement Peace Now. Among his many acclaimed works is the autobiographical novel A Tale of Love and Darkness, which was adapted into a film in 2016. His awards included the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade (1992), the Israel Prize (1998) and the Goethe Prize of the City of Frankfurt (2005).
