Aeschylus (525/524 BC, Eleusis – 456 BC, Gela) was a Greek dramatist and, alongside Sophocles and Euripides, is considered one of the three great tragedians of antiquity. He won the Dionysia, the ancient dramatic competition, 13 times. Of the approximately 90 plays attributed to him, seven have survived. As a member of the Athenian army, he took part in the Battle of Salamis against the Persians in 480 BC. His best-known works include The Persians and the trilogy Oresteia, comprising Agamemnon, The Libation Bearers, and The Eumenides.
