Oskar Werner

Oskar Werner (1922–1984), born Josef Bschließmayer, was an Austrian actor and reciter. He made his stage debut at the age of 18 at Vienna’s Burgtheater and belonged to its ensemble during several periods up to 1961. His international film career also took him to Hollywood. He became known internationally for his roles in François Truffaut’s “Jules and Jim” (1961) and “Fahrenheit 451” (1966). For his role as the ship’s doctor in “Ship of Fools” (1965), he was nominated for the 1964 Academy Award for Best Actor. Werner was also known for reading and interpreting literary texts.
